Ferrari 365 GTS History

The Ferrari 365 GTS arrived at the October 1968 Paris Motor Show and was eclipsed on the spot. Sharing the stand was the Ferrari 365 GTB/4, the rakish 174 mph berlinetta that understandably stole the headlines. While the press crowded around the car the world would come to call the Daytona, Ferrari quietly presented one of the rarest open cars it would ever build.

Just 20 examples of the 365 GTS were built, all in 1969, with serial numbers running from SN11227 through SN12493. It is not the 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider, a different car entirely with a different engine, a different body, and a separate production history. 

The 365 GTS was the open Spyder trim of the 365 GTC, a discreet twin-cam grand tourer built for a clientele with quite different requirements than the Daytona buyer.

That discretion is why the car was forgotten. It is also why the surviving examples matter so much. With a population of 20, the registry’s goal for the 365 GTS is not representative coverage. It is complete documentation of every car.

The 365 GTC and GTS also had an understated elegance about them which was not something that could be said about the wild looking GTB/4.
